Assessing the damage and loss of life the day after three bombs exploded in Dublin.
Three bombs were detonated in Dublin on 17 May 1974 killing 23 people. The Talbot Street explosion was caused by a 100 pound bomb which had been planted in a blue Escort car. The car had been stolen from the Belfast docks area yesterday morning. Seven people were killed instantly. One of the victims was a newspaper vendor on the corner of Gardiner Street.
In terms of life lost, people injured and property damaged, the Talbot St explosion was the most devastating of the three in Dublin.
Five people were killed in the car bomb which exploded on Parnell Street. The bomb had been planted in a green Hillman Avenger stolen from Turin Street in Belfast. It exploded outside a building next to the Welcome Inn pub located around 150 yards from the Parnell monument. There was extensive damage to property on the street.
On South Leinster Street, the bomb was planted in a green Austin 1800 and three people died when it exploded. This car was hijacked in Belfast. All the windows in the Phoenix Assurance building were blown out.
