Exhibitions mark the one-hundredth anniversary of the first meeting of the Congress of Trade Unions.
President Mary Robinson opened an exhibition on the changing world of work presented by second level students from around the country at Trinity College Dublin. The president will also be the guest of honour at a centenary concert at the National Concert Hall.
Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht Michael D Higgins opened two exhibitions 'Labour in Art' and 'At Work' exploring the representation of work and workers in art at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham.
The Labour in Art exhibition features work from the mid-19th to the mid-20th centuries and includes many pieces by leading artists from the period.
Works by Sean Keating, Maurice McGonigal and William Connor are included in the exhibition.
The second exhibition 'At Work' features photographs by Derek Speirs accompanied by commentary from journalist Gene Kerrigan.
The exhibition openings were attended by leading trade unionists from Ireland and overseas.
