Cutting edge fashion from Derry designers Michelle Bradley and Emer MacBride.
Bassist for the Derry punk band The Undertones and radio producer for BBC Radio Foyle Michael Bradley recalls a time when the city of Derry was not at all fashion forward.
When The Undertones went to London, record company people were always trying to persuade them to dress like popstars. They never did because they knew such clothing would not translate to the streets of Derry and,
We didn't fancy the attention we'd get so we stuck to what we knew.
Since then, Derry has become more open-minded.
People seem to be more accepting of anything that's new or strange or different in terms of fashion in terms of music.
Michael Bradley believes talent returning to Derry is very important for the people who come back and provides a base to encourage others to return.
Michelle O'Doherty studied at the Royal College of Art in London. She spent four years in Italy before returning to Ireland to work for designer Paul Costelloe. She then decided to start her own business in Derry.
Choosing to work from Derry was a logical choice for Michelle O'Doherty. Back working in her hometown she feels comfortable and has support. There are many clothing companies in Derry and there is a lot of skill in the area.
So, I mean, why not Derry?
Derry's most established designer Edel MacBride creates knitwear. She has been knitting since she was 3 years of age but never believed it could eventually become her career.
I didn't even realise there was such a thing as a career in fashion.
Edel MacBride studied at the Limerick School of Art and Design. When she was in her second year, she was commissioned by Paul Costello to make sweaters. This started her up in business.
Operating out of the Craft Village in Derry, the historic location and environment perfectly suit her creations. From modest beginnings, she now has hundreds of garments and accessories for sale.
Edel MacBride has seen the city grow in prosperity and rather than being at its peak, Derry has a very bright future.
