Mixed views from drivers to the introduction of a 60 miles per hour speed limit .
Minister for Local Government Mr Kevin Boland TD announced the new regulations under Section 24 of the Road Traffic Act, 1968, which will prescribe a general speed limit of 60 miles per hour for all mechanically propelled vehicles on all public roads which are not subject to built-up area or special speed limits at present. Exceptions are made for ambulances, fire brigades and Garda vehicles.
Opinions from drivers on the introduction of the new speed limits are mixed. While some welcome it on grounds of safety, others believe the new limit sets the speed too low.
I think a lot of the accidents are as a result of speed.
I think it will probably make the roads much safer.
One objector to the new speed limit said,
There's no point in having big cars and having good roads.
