A UCD report finds a need for a comprehensive plan for inner city Dublin if it is to have a viable future.
A report published by the Department of Psychiatry at University College Dublin (UCD) states that the plight of people living in the north inner city is bad and getting worse. A fall in the population of the city centre is accompanied by poor housing and unemployment.
Director of the Community Development Division at UCD Paddy Walley, calls for the establishment of a special government agency to draw up plans for the area and to oversee their implementation. He says that Dublin Corporation is not equipped to deal with the situation.
The situation has deteriorated to a considerable degree and is likely to get worse given the contradiction of the present plans.
Paddy Walley says that the current situation in the north inner city is not suitable for human development and will become completely intolerable. There needs to be a comprehensive, cohesive and integrated plan for the people of the area. People need to know if they have a future in the inner city.
