People come to see the nativity scene created at a live crib in Galway.
Children from the Mercy Primary School in Galway greet visitors to the live crib with Christmas carols. They are just one school choir who will sing throughout the day. This annual event is supported by the primary schools in the city which provide the music.
Fr Martin Whelan from Galway Cathedral paid tribute to the parishioners who have organised this reenactment of the first Christmas and created,
A fantastic atmosphere.
The roles of Mary, Joseph and the shepherds are played by volunteers in half-hour shifts, with young babies cast in the role of the infant Jesus.
Breege Moore and her family have been coming here every year, and her daughter Alicia is having her time in the spotlight today as baby Jesus.
The live crib started at Galway Cathedral in 2000 and continues to grow in popularity. Parishioner Faherty has seen it turn into an annual event.
They just kept coming the people and every year it gets better.
The animals are content to be here and are used to being around people, as local farmer Trevor Cunningham explains,
They're from a pet farm, they’re exceptionally quiet.
Members of the public who visit the live crib can also make donations to charities in the Galway area.
