Charities benefit as runners of all abilities with a range of motivations take part in the Dublin marathon.

Almost 12,000 people take part in the Dublin City Marathon and most of them are running the 26 mile challenge to raise money for charity. Former Tyrone GAA footballer Peter Canavan is running but not setting himself a time to beat and will be happy to complete the course.

Well known and self-titled "Dublin character" Jamsie Hempsey is running dressed as a Viking.

At the finish line participants in a state of happiness at completing the race and absolute agony. Physiotherapist Jenny Brannigan says that the key is to make sure that the runners do not just stop moving after finishing. Once muscles stop working, they will just seize up.

Ernesto Antonio received a heart transplant nine years ago and today ran the fastest marathon for a transplant recipient.

The 29th Dublin City Marathon was won by Ukrainian athlete Andriy Naumov in a time of 2 hours 11 minutes and 6 seconds.
