The development of a Leixlip school is limited by inadequate infrastructure.

Scoil Chearbhaill Uí Dhálaigh was founded in Leixlip County Kildare four years ago. It is a Gaelscoil where over one hundred and sixty children are taught through the Irish language.

Situated on a section of the local GAA club grounds, the classrooms consist of four prefabricated buildings and one classroom in a local school. Pupil numbers mean that one class goes home at noon in order to facilitate another starting after that time.

Staff and children have to put up with unsatisfactory conditions, such as a limited number of toilets and dilapidated buildings. Teacher Diarmuid Ó Raghnaigh explains,

An bhliain seo chaite…thit na fallaí don seomra seo.

Parent Teresa De Búrca is also unhappy with the current classroom situation,

Caithim an lá ag taistil chuig na scoile.

Delays from the Department of Education regarding any way forward for Scoil Chearbhaill Uí Dhálaigh is of most concern to the school community. Assurances have been given, but as Breandán De Róiste from the school Board of Management explains,

Tá an-fhaitíos ar thuismitheoirí…go mbainfeadh moill arís le cóiríocht na scoile an bhliain seo chughainn.
