The introduction of divorce to Ireland will have legal and financial implications for couples.

Minister for Equality and Law Reform Mervyn Taylor hopes divorce will not become a financial bonanza for lawyers. The minister was speaking at the launch of a mediation service by AIM, the family law group. AIM says,

Its mediation service will help couples whose marriages have broken down to agree about arrangements for children and property without having to go to court.

The mediation service allows couples to come to an arrangement which suits both parties without the involvement of a judge. Mervyn Taylor said that the cost of pursuing a legal remedy for couples can be staggering. The objective of the government is to make sure that the introduction of divorce in Ireland does not become another financial bonanza for lawyers. Mervyn Taylor said that the referendum on divorce will be held next year but a date for voting has yet to be set.
