A collection of letters written by John Millington Synge is presented to Trinity College Dublin.
Most of playwright John Millington Synge's original writings have been collected by Trinity College Dublin. The latest donation from a Canadian academic is mostly made up of letters from J.M. Synge to his fiancée, the actress Molly Allgood from the period 1906 to 1909.
Nicholas Green, Director of the Synge Summer School, says that the writer's relationship with Molly was very significant.
This was the only love of his life.
The letters written over a three year period stress how their relationship transformed his life. The couple met when he was 35 and Molly was 19.
The documents also include an example of Synge's earliest writings, a list of debts he owed mainly to members of his family which he wrote when he was about seven years old.
The letters provide a fascinating insight into the man behind the playwright.
It is estimated that the TCD J.M. Synge collection is worth around half a million pounds.
