How can Ireland cut carbon emissions without damaging industry or jobs?
The Tánaiste Mary Harney said the proposed carbon energy taxes would have to be introduced sensibly so that they do not drive up costs. Taxes are needed if Ireland is to meet targets under the Kyoto Agreement to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Business leaders warn that these taxes could cost companies six hundred million euro a year.
Ireland must cut emissions by 2010 to meet its obligations under the Kyoto Treaty.
Tanya Harrington, IBEC, says that the key issue facing businesses is competitiveness. Action on climate change needs to support businesses and protect jobs.
Minister for the Environment Martin Cullen TD says that carbon taxes have to be introduced as part of the effort to correct the environmental mistakes of the past.
