The restoration of the English Market in Cork is recognised with a medal in the prestigious Europa Nostra awards scheme.

Working under the Council of Europe, Europa Nostra is an international federation of associations for the protection of Europe's cultural and natural heritage.

For the first time ever the Europa Nostra gold medal has been awarded to an Irish architectural project.

The award recognises the restoration and modernisation of the English Market, between Princes Street and Grand Parade in Cork city centre. The English Market was destroyed by fire in June 1980.

The market got its name hundreds of years ago when it was considered more exclusive than the so called Irish market on Coal Quay by the British domiciled here.

At a ceremony in City Hall, Lord Mayor of Cork Hugh Coveney accepts the award on behalf of the Corporation from Group Captain Gordon Pirie on behalf of Europa Nostra.
