Young athletes compete in a range of events at the National Community Games in Santry.
The National Community Games opened with a parade of the 800 competitors from across the country at Santry Stadium in Dublin on Saturday 16 September 1972.
The games were sponsored by the National Dairy Council and the Irish Independent. Milk Merit Awards were presented by the Dairy Queen Helen Farrelly. The young people taking part each received a booklet explaining the philosophy of the games and articles from leading Irish sports people providing advice and tips on reaching the top in their sport.

The winning community is presented with the National Dairy Council trophy along with a £200 contribution towards recreational facilities in their area.
