Art and architecture students in Cork are unhappy with how courses are being run and the awarding of qualifications.

Around 120 students have staged a one day strike and are threatening a total strike if positive action is not taken to address their grievances by 20 November. The students are primarily concerned with how the Cork College of Art is unable to issue recognised qualifications.

The strike was carried out by the full-time day students of art and architecture who are protesting against what they have called inadequacies within the school.

They're demanding an investigation into all facets of the system.

Richard A Perrot, one of the students leading the protest, says that the students have been trying to get action taken to improve conditions at the school of art. He says that their demands have been continually ignored despite repeated attempts to bring them to the attention of the college authorities.

The school of art as it stands issues no degrees, diplomas or qualifications of any sort and if I am to get anywhere, it means that I have to go England to do an examination in England set by an English institute while there is an Irish institute here.
