A fire on Grafton Street destroys Pigotts the oldest music shop in Dublin.

The blaze started in the basement and quickly spread through the five stories of the Pigotts building with its stock of musical instruments.

Part of Grafton Street and College Green were closed off by Gardaí as the fire spread through the building in the early morning. Five sections of Dublin Fire Brigade attempted to contain the fire.

Pigotts had been operating on Grafton Street since 1823 and employed 40 staff. Thousands of pounds worth of musical instruments and recording equipment were destroyed as well as the entire piano factory on the third floor.
