A new scheme aims to keep Dublin city free of litter by encouraging people to take responsibility for their rubbish.

The Stop Litter campaign hopes to address the problem of refuse on the streets of Dublin. The campaign comes following the introduction of litter wardens who have the power to impose on-the-spot fines. The public are now being asked to play their part.

This new offensive against litter is the latest initiative by Dublin Corporation to clean up the capital.

The new litter free zones include O'Connell Street, O'Connell Street, Talbot Street, the Custom House and Eden Quay.

The scheme was inaugurated today by the Lord Mayor of Dublin Daniel Brown. He believes that people will respond in a positive way to the marking out of the litter free zone. He says that traders and residents in the zone are fully supportive of the initiative.

We've had a wonderful response from the people in relation to keeping this particular area free of litter.

The Lord Mayor, as the first citizen of the city, even took up a brush to sweep O'Connell Street.
