The elder stateswoman of one of the oldest Irish clans, Mary Sheridan is laid to rest in Rathkeale, County Limerick.
Known as the queen of the clan, 90 year old Mary Sheridan of Rathkeale, County Limerick died in hospital on 6 March 1962. Her funeral took place the following day at Saint Patrick's Church in Limerick with mourners making their way to Rathkeale cemetery for the burial ceremony.
The interment was stopped when Sean Sheridan, eldest son of the deceased, discovered that the wrong grave had been opened. Mary Sheridan’s remains were kept overnight at the nearby parish church and a new grave was opened. On 8 March 1962 the mourners returned and the burial took place.
