Huntsmen and women take part in a lawn meet at Moate in Westmeath.

The fields around Ballinderry County Westmeath resounded with the sounds of hounds and hunting horn today when huntsmen and women gathered for a lawn meet, the first of its kind in the midlands. It took place on the lands of Edward Cash who is well known in showjumping circles. A large number of spectators also turned out.

Wet ground and the crossing of ditches presented challenges to those taking part in the hunt.

Even exercising all the caution in the world, some riders still came to grief.

It may have been heavy going for the horses, but the hounds remained unphased as they raced in pursuit of their quarry,

The fox...many people will be pleased to know, managed his escape.
