Bono delivers a petition of more than 21 million signatures to the United Nations Millennium Summit calling on the world's wealthiest countries to cancel the debts of poorer nations.
The Millennium Summit is taking place at United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York from 6-8 September 2000. In attendance are 149 heads of state and government and high-ranking officials from over 40 other countries.
On the second day of the summit, lead singer with U2 Bono and Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, deliver a petition of 21.2 million signatures to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan calling on the world's wealthiest countries to cancel the debts of poor nations. The signatures were collected at religious and other organisations in 155 countries.

At the UN Millennium Summit 189 nations, including Ireland adopted the UN Millennium Development Goals. These eight internationally agreed goals and targets to reduce global poverty are to be achieved by 2015.
