On the day that Jack Lynch was laid to rest, a reminder of just how deep the affection held for him was by the people of Cork.
Jack Lynch enjoyed the closest of relationships with the people of Cork. Because he was of them himself, he was easy among them.
People from all over the country lined the route of the funeral on the streets of Cork and paid their respects to the former Taoiseach and GAA star in what was Cork's first state funeral.
He was a great man both on the GAA field and in the political scene.
I think his honesty is what the people of Cork and of Ireland will remember him for.
It would be hard to make an enemy of Jack Lynch.
We shall not see his likes again.
The former Taoiseach and sportsman died on 20 October 1999.
