Thousands take part in the Ring Around Reagan protest over the visit of President of the USA to Ireland.

This was just one of many protests to take place around the country in the lead up to and during the visit of President Ronald Reagan to Ireland.

Protesters at the GPO Dublin included groups as diverse as Catholic priests and nuns, and members of the extreme left. Many public representatives who oppose the presidential visit were in attendance.

The Ring Around Reagan Demonstration hopes to highlight concern and opposition to the consequences of current US foreign policy and to express solidarity with the victims of those policies.

Organisers of the protest estimate that around five thousand people turned out on O'Connell Street to voice their opposition to the Reagan visit and US foreign policy.

President Reagan arrived in Ireland on 1 June on a four day visit which included a trip to his ancestral home in Ballyporeen, County Tipperary.
