On 31 August 1994, the IRA declared a “complete cessation” of violence. The RTÉ Newsroom received a cassette and a written message from the IRA confirming the details of the ceasefire.

One year on David Davin Power looks back on the political events of the last year since the ceasefire was announced. From celebrations on the Falls Road, to the Sinn Féin leadership being welcomed at both Irish government buildings and in Washington, and finally recognition of the ceasefire by the British government.

However, the issue of IRA arms still stood in the way of political progress. In Belfast, the framework document was launched by John Bruton and John Major, setting out a shared vision of the future for Northern Ireland.
