Some scenes from the race meeting in 1954 photographed by amateur film maker PJ Gilmore.

PJ Gilmore and his brother ran a chain of small cinemas in Mayo and Galway in the 1950s but found it difficult to get audiences in hard times. PJ Gilmore acquired a 16mm film camera and began to capture local events and then screening the films.

The films of the late PJ Gilmore were donated to RTÉ Archives by his family.  PJ Gilmore was the subject of Peter Feeney’s 1984 documentary 'The Flight from the Snipe Grass'.
