When President Kennedy was assassinated on 22 November 1963 Irish sports commentator Michael O'Hehir broke the news to Telefís Éireann by telephone from New York. Coverage of the funeral in Washington DC on 25 November 1963 was broadcast on Telefís Éireann via Telstar satellite. Telefís Éireann and Radio Éireann also covered many of the events that took place throughout Ireland to mark the passing of President Kennedy.
In the aftermath of these events, viewers wrote to Telefís Éireann commending the coverage of President Kennedy’s death. Samples of these letters appeared in the ‘Letterbox’ section of the RTV Guide published on 6 December, 1963.
