The first section of a boardwalk along the river Liffey in Dublin city centre is put in place.

A new promenade for the city, the River Liffey Boardwalk is another national millennium project for Dublin.

Now Dublin wants to make the Liffey the centre of attention again.

The boardwalk measures four metres wide and over half a kilometre long. The timber structure is supported by steel brackets attached to the quay wall.

Minister Seamus Brennan believes that the boardwalk will bring back a sense of excitement to the Liffey

All great cities gather around their river and I think Dublin is no exception.

The first section of the boardwalk running from O'Connell Bridge to the Ha'penny Bridge is due to open in two weeks. The full boardwalk length will run to Grattan Bridge at Capel Street and is due to open in October. Upon completion, the boardwalk will have benches for people to sit on and enjoy the river. There are also plans for refreshment kiosks and craft stalls.
