Irish-American Hank O' Mahony on why he came to Ireland and stayed.
'In A Strange Land' is a documentary by Siobhan McHugh on immigration to Ireland during the early 1980's. In this clip Siobhan meets Irish-American Hank O'Mahony, who talks about his reasons for coming to Ireland and staying.
Hank identifies two reasons for coming to Ireland. Firstly, his grandmother had constantly told him about Ireland and he had always wanted to come. Secondly, was his work with native American indians which made him question his own identity and past. Hank works with under-privileged communities and commutes between Spiddal and Liverpool for work. He identifies a problem in Ireland in that nobody is prepared to provide funding for independent community development. He also identifies political clientelism as the core of the system in Ireland.
