A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man in Waterford early this morning.

It follows the results of a post-mortem examination on the body of 25-year-old Jack Power from Dunmore East.

Gardaí were called to an incident at Shanakiel in the town at around 3.40am this morning.

Mr Power was found at the scene and treated for a stab wound.

He was taken to University Hospital Waterford where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the incident and is being held at Waterford Garda Station.

The scene in Dunmore East is preserved for a forensic examination.
