Focus Ireland has opened a new 31-unit social housing development at the site of a former emergency accommodation shelter in Dublin city centre.

The charity faced some criticism in 2015 when the temporary hostel at John's Lane West was closed down in order for construction work to commence.

The building was demolished and replaced by the new development.

Speaking at the opening, Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy said the Government was committed to increasing the supply of housing to address homelessness.

He said 10,000 new homes would be added to the active social housing stock, aimed at meeting the housing needs of 27,000 families and individuals who are currently on local authority waiting lists.

Focus Ireland has provided over 500 homes in partnership with the State since 2015.

It plans to deliver a total of 750 homes over the course of its current five-year plan (to 2020).
