A 61-year-old man has been charged with the murder of his mother at a house in Clontarf in Dublin at the weekend.
Brendan Murray, with an address at Kincora Court in Clontarf, appeared before a special sitting of Dublin District Court this evening.
88-year-old Neasa Murray was fatally assaulted on Sunday evening.
Detective Sergeant David Ennis gave evidence to the court of arrest, charge and caution.
He said Mr Murray was cautioned at 5.40pm today and was charged with murder at 6pm.
Judge John Brennan agreed that an urgent psychiatric assessment be carried out.
He remanded Mr Murray in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court via video link next Friday.
