Woman accused of producing knife to stab child's father

A woman in her 30s has appeared in court in Blanchardstown, Co Dublin, accused of assault causing harm and producing a knife to stab her partner and the father of one of her children.

Samantha Courtney, 39, with an address at Lealand Road, Bawnogue, Clondalkin is charged with assaulting Derek Denton, who is in his 50s, outside her home on Saturday 21 February.

He was taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, where his condition has been described as critical.

Garda Colm Doherty told Judge David McHugh that Ms Courtney made no reply when charged.

Simon Fleming, representing Ms Courtney, applied for bail and said his client would agree to bail conditions. These include not contancting witnesses, including her son. He said her friends and family were present in court to offer a surety of €500.

Gda Doherty objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the charges, which carry jail sentences of up ten years for assault and seven years for producing a weapon.

He also referred to the strength of the evidence, which included CCTV footage of the alleged incident and witness evidence.

Judge McHugh refused bail, saying the evidence offered had a certain strength and the seriousness of the charges increased the risk that the accused might not turn up for court.

He grantee legal aid.

Ms Courtney will appear by video link at Blanchardstown District Court next Monday 2 March at 10.30am.
