Two men have appeared in court in connection with an alleged assault of a Laois inter-county GAA player in Carlow in the early hours of Monday morning.

Daniel O'Reilly was left with serious head injuries following an incident in the Potato Market area of Carlow town at about 1am on Monday.

He was taken to St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny where his condition is said to be improving.

Two men from Carlow, both in their 20s, were arrested and charged with assault causing harm.

They were brought before a sitting of Carlow District Court this morning.

Tommy Lee Thompson, 20, from Springfield Park, Carlow, and Brendan Keating, 24, from New Oak Estate, Carlow, were before Judge Miriam Walsh.

Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Garda Daniel Ryan.

The court heard that when charged Mr Keating made no reply.

Both men were granted legal aid and given bail on agreement that they adhere to a number of conditions, including they sign-on at Carlow Garda Station four times a week.

They are due back in court on 2 May.
