People are being advised to continue working from home and to avoid public transport where possible, as part of new restrictions aimed at stopping the spread of Covid-19 in Ireland.

The Cabinet agreed that arrangements for school transport will proceed as planned and that no additional social distancing requirements will be put in place.

The wearing of face coverings is also advised on private transport in situations where households are mixed.

Speaking at this evening's Government briefing, Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn appealed to employers to once again "step up".

"Employers and organisations all across society must also step up once again and ensure they have the proper measures in place to create a safe environment for customers and staff," he said.

"We are not powerless against this disease; we can alter its course, but to do so we must act together now."

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the country is not at a stage where we can return to normality, adding that "we are at another critical moment".

"Now as much as ever before, we must remember our responsibilities to each other."

The Government has also agreed to finalise and publish a roadmap for "resilience and recovery" before 13 September, which the Taoiseach said will plan out how to live with the virus and how society and economy remains open while suppressing the virus.

It comes as Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said a further 190 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed today.

He said there were multiple clusters throughout the country in homes and workplaces.

Mr Donnelly said the 14-day cumulative rate of cases per 100,000 is now 26.

The minister said a number of measures need to be implemented to reverse the spread of the virus to protect public health, lives, health services and get schools open.
