Twenty six workers are to lose their jobs at a pump manufacturing plant in County Laois.

Standex Ireland has been in operation in Mountmellick since 1978 and has a second plant with approximately 40 more workers in the Irishtown area of the town who are not believed to be affected by the closure.

The workers were called to a meeting today and given the news by the general manager of Procon, the US company which owns Standex Ireland.

SIPTU representatives are to begin a consultation with union members and management following the announcement of planned redundancies.

The company manufactures pump components and carries out assembly and testing on the full range of Procon pumps, precision rotary vane pumps and other small gear and micro vane pumps destined for the European market.
