Thousands of people across the country have taken part in free artistic and cultural events as part of Culture Night, now in its 13th year.

The night aims to raise the profile of arts and cultural institutions and encourage audiences to try something new.

Many arts and cultural institutions and venues have opened their doors late and free of charge - with specially commissioned events on in many locations.

Culture Night is an initiative of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in partnership with the regional arts offices, local authorities and cultural organisations throughout the country.

In Cork and Dublin free buses will be provided to help people attend events.

Also in the capital, RTÉ is presenting an outdoor concert at Collins Barracks.

No tickets are required for the free event which stars Gavin James, Villagers and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra among others.

Last year, around 400,000 people attended events nationwide.

There are hundreds of events planned for this year- with all details available at Culture Night.ie
