Five people have been taken to hospital following a fire in New Ross, co Wexford, this afternoon.

Two adults and three children are being treated for smoke inhalation following a fire at a three-storey house on Mary Street.

It is understood the family were in the upper sections of the house when the fire started.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The family has been taken to University Hospital Waterford for treatment.

It appears a man in his 50s who was working on a house next door saw smoke and flames coming from the house and alerted the emergency services.

He went into the house and rescued a man and three young children; the youngest of whom was three years of age.

One boy is understood to be seriously injured, but is in a stable condition.

Emergency Services remain at the scene and the fire is under control.
