Hopes are high that next year's Oscars will be another big night for Irish talent after 2023's record number of nominations.

US entertainment trade publication Variety has surveyed the current state of play in the Academy Awards race - and a number of household Irish names feature prominently.

It predicts that the Best Actor category will see Cillian Murphy receive his first Oscar nomination for his performance in Oppenheimer.

Variety also puts Andrew Scott among those 'Next in Line' for a Best Actor Oscar nod for his performance in All of Us Strangers - another first nomination.

All of Us Strangers, which also stars Paul Mescal, is due for release on Friday 26 January 2024.

Barry Keoghan is among the 'Other Top-Tier Possibilities' in the 2024 Best Actor shake-up for his role in Saltburn. The film opens on Friday 17 November.

Keoghan received his first Oscar nomination this year for The Banshees of Inisherin.

Michael Fassbender is 'Also in Contention' for a Best Actor nomination for his new film The Killer. It arrives on Netflix on Friday 10 November.

Fassbender was previously Oscar-nominated for his performances in Steve Jobs and 12 Years a Slave.

Paul Mescal is among the 'Other Top-Tier Possibilities' in next year's Best Supporting Actor category for his performance opposite Andrew Scott in All of Us Strangers.

Mescal was nominated in the Best Actor category this year for his performance in Aftersun.

In its 2024 Best Actress Oscar analysis, Variety says Fingernails' star Jessie Buckley, Flora and Son's Eve Hewson, and Foe's Saoirse Ronan are among the 'Other Top-Tier Possibilities'.

Buckley was previously Oscar-nominated for her role in The Lost Daughter.

Ronan was previously nominated for Atonement, Brooklyn, Lady Bird, and Little Women.

Fingernails arrives on Apple TV+ on Friday 3 November; Flora and Son is in cinemas now and streams on Apple TV+ from Friday; Foe - also starring Paul Mescal - is due for release on Friday 20 October.

In the 2024 Best Original Screenplay category, Flora and Son writer-director John Carney is among those 'Also in Contention' for his new musical drama.

The Emma Stone-starring Poor Things, which is produced by Irish company Element Pictures, is predicted to pick up multiple Oscar nominations in January.

Already the Best Picture winner at the Venice Film Festival, Poor Things' Oscar nominations haul is expected to include Best Picture, Best Director for Yorgos Lanthimos, and Best Actress for Stone, with Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan among those 'Next in Line' for a nomination.

Ryan received his first Oscar nomination for his work on Lanthimos' The Favourite - also produced by Element Pictures and starring Stone.

The hit Netflix documentary The Deepest Breath, directed by Irish filmmaker Laura McGann and with Irish company Motive Films among the producers, is considered to be 'Also in Contention' for a Best Documentary Feature Oscar nomination alongside Disney+'s Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, with David Letterman.

The Oscar nominations will be announced on Tuesday 23 January 2024.

The Academy Awards will take place on Sunday 10 March 2024.

The biggest night in Irish cinema history at this year's Oscars saw wins for the short An Irish Goodbye and Avatar: The Way of Water's special effects trailblazer Richard Baneham.
