Wild Rose and Chernobyl actress Jessie Buckley has opened up about her mental health, saying that having therapy for her anxiety has been "brilliant" for her.

The rising Irish star, who was recently named as an actor to watch by US film industry publication Variety, spoke about how working to overcome her anxieties has helped her work as an actress.

In an interview with ES Magazine she said of receiving therapy: "It's harder when you're away filming, because you have to build that relationship up.

"But I bloody love it. It's been brilliant for me. It's about being honest. There's no point pretending.

"If I don't do that in my own life, how the hell am I meant to play somebody else's?"

The Kerry-born talent said that her mental health battles have mellowed as she has learnt to accept and deal with her fears.

She said: "It's definitely better, but I'm still human. I still have days when I get sad.

"And I get days when I get happy, and I get days when I get scared. But now I feel the things.

"I'm not frightened of them, actually they're all important.

"You've just got to accept them, invite them in and say: 'Have a cup of tea and what's going on?', instead of trying to repress them, which I probably did when I was young, because I was scared of them."

The Killarney-born actress and singer first came to fame aged 18 when she was the runner-up in the BBC talent competition I'd Do Anything in 2008.

Since then her career has gone from strength-to-strength, with the actress landing roles on the West End, in TV series including the BBC's adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, Taboo, and The Woman in White, and a critically acclaimed role in the psychological thriller Beast.

She impressed earlier this year in the musical drama Wild Rose and in the hit HBO mini-series Chernobyl and can next be seen on the big screen alongside Renee Zellweger in the Judy Garland biopic Judy, which is slated for release on October 4.

She plays Rosalyn Wilder, the production assistant who worked with Wizard of Oz star Garland during her last performances in London in the winter of 1968.
