A week of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising ended with a ceremony at the General Post Office in O'Connell Street, Dublin.
President de Valera gave the closing address at the final tribute to the men and women of 1916. Veterans of the Easter Rising and the War of Independence paraded in front of the GPO. The Last Post and Reveille was sounded by trumpeters from the Irish army and troops who lined the parapet of the General Post Office fired a feu de joie.
The ceremony was broadcast live on RTÉ radio and television.

Information: | Telefís Éireann (RTÉ) was broadcasting in black and white in 1966. This meant any recordings that were to be kept of commemoration events to mark the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising would only exist in black and white. Television producer Michael Johnston came up with the idea of using colour film cameras to document events of Easter Week 1966 in Dublin and around the country. These films were not intended for broadcast but purely as a record of the events of Easter Week 1966. The footage shown here is edited from film shot in O'Connell Street on the 16th April 1966. |
