Donal Kelly reports on the scenes of destruction in Derry after the rioting of the previous night.

The streets are strewn with rubble and debris. There are abandoned, burnt-out vehicles as well as torched buildings. Shop windows and premises throughout the city are boarded and shuttered.

Donal Kelly says appeals from the clergy, civil rights officers, and politicians were ignored as youths clashed with police throughout the weekend.

Kelly describes the face of the city as a "scarred and ugly site" as locals attempt to clean up the mess after two days of rioting.

The physical damage is nothing in comparison to the damage that has been done to the fabric of life in the city as the community has been torn apart as respect for law and order disappeared. Locals wait with fear for another night of riots in the city.
