The British Attorney General, Sir Patrick Mayhew, is attempting to overturn a Northern Ireland Appeal Court ruling that three Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) officers, involved in a undercover operation in 1982 in which three Irish Republican Army (IRA) men were shot dead, should give evidence at the inquest into their deaths. The shooting of the three men, Gervais Mckerr, Sean Burns and Eugene Toman in November 1982 gave rise to allegations of a shoot-to-kill policy within the security forces.
