Doctor John O'Grady, kidnapped twenty three days ago by an armed gang, was rescued at midday by detectives in Dublin, just one hour before a £1.5m ransom was due to be handed over.

Detective Martin O'Connor was seriously wounded in the ensuing gun battle.

The kidnap gang escaped, taking Mrs Una Dermody and a friend hostage at Clondalkin. Two male gang members forced her to drive to Limerick.
