Students organise deomonstration in response to the postponement of examinations.
Students from the College of Technology, Kevin Street, hold a sit-down protest on O'Connell Bridge in Dublin, bringing traffic in the city centre to a standstill.
Examinations at the college have been postponed due to the Teachers’ Union of Ireland refusing to set and mark exams unless additional payment is provided. The Minister for Education, Richard Burke, has argued that teachers have already received reduced working hours in lieu of extra pay. Students at technical colleges say the ongoing dispute is damaging their career prospects and have taken to the streets in protest.
The protesters march through the city carrying banners calling for the exams to go ahead. They also carried an effigy of the minister, labelled as a traitor. The figure was burned on O’Connell Bridge as demonstrators chanted "burn, burn, burn".
Further protests were also reported in a number of regional centres.
