The Office of Public Works are renovating a lakeside castle in Kerry.
Ross Castle lies on the shore of Lough Leane, around 2km from Killarney town in County Kerry. The castle was closed to visitors in 1971 due to the dangerous condition of the roof beams.
In 1973, the Office of Public Works (OPW) took over the castle from its previous owner, John McShane. The OPW is now carrying out major restoration works on the castle.
The restoration involves substantial structural interventions, including the rebuilding of the vault over the main ground floor chamber and the reconstruction of most window openings. There are plans to reopen the castle, which was built around 1340, once the works are complete.
