An tremor in the Irish Sea measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale was felt in parts of Wicklow and Wexford.

The seismic event which occurred at 3.30am was recorded by monitoring stations. It took place thirty kilometres off the Irish coast and according to Tom Blake from the School of Cosmic Physics in Dublin, is significant, as it was,

Being felt by people as opposed to the instruments.

John Geraghty from Newcastle County Wicklow felt the vibrations in his home,

We just got an awful fright.

It is one of a number of tremors that have occurred in the area in the past. In 1951 one measured over 3 on the Richter scale, while the most serious seismic shock was recorded in 1984, measuring 5.4, causing structural damage along the east coast.
