Michael D Higgins becomes the ninth President of Ireland.
At St Patrick's Hall in Dublin Castle, Michael D Higgins was sworn in to the office of President of Ireland by Chief Justice Mrs Justice Susan Denham.
The ceremony began with an interfaith service and a humanist reflection. This was followed by the declaration of office when the president received his seal of office. In doing so, Michael D Higgins pledged to serve the people and uphold the constitution.
As the declaration of office was signed, a twenty one gun salute rang out at Collins Barracks.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny paid tribute to the ninth President of Ireland and his many years of service to the Irish people.
There is no nobility without virtue.
