Christian crosses in the Nobber village graveyard indicate that this was once an important monastic site.
Archaeologists have described the find of thirteen high crosses in a Meath cemetery as truly remarkable. The crosses are believed to date from the 10th century pinpoint the location of a very significant monastic site which had previously been unknown.
The remains of thirteen high crosses were discovered during a clean up of the graveyard.
They're called high crosses but none of them are very high at all. In fact, they're all very small.
Archaeologist Heather King describes the find as an extraordinary find of early Christian monuments. Professor George Eogan, UCD, says that there was no previous reference to this site in literary or historical sources.
A team of experts will now begin work mapping and examining the graveyard to see what else might be discovered on the site.
