A small Donegal community has created a centre that combines community, tourism and environmental activities.

The Portnoo area of west Donegal has a population of about 550 people. Residents of the area who share a pride in their environment and have established a unique centre based on the impressive Kilclooney More dolmen.

The Dolmen ecotourism centre is the first of its kind.

The multipurpose centre, which is powered almost entirely naturally, integrates community, tourism and environmental activities. Solar panels an underground geothermal heat system, and a wind turbine all combine to harness energy for the building.

Minister of State at the Department of Public Enterprise, Joe Jacob would like to see similar centres established throughout the country. He describes the centre as a role model which raises public awareness about energy conservation. Conal Shovlin, Chairman of Narin Portnoo Rosbeg Development outlines measures that can be taken to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

80 per cent of the building's energy comes from renewable sources. Waste is treated by an eco reed bed system. The overall result, a flagship project for green energy.
