Thousands of people attend the National Ploughing Championships at Rockwell College in Tipperary.

Carlow man, John Treacy is once again the National Ploughing Champion. Despite his success John Treacy can not go on to represent Ireland in the world championships as he has already participated in that event four times, as often as the rules allow. The world ploughing championships take place in Wexford next year and will be an even bigger event than the national championships, which cover 400 acres.

Chairman of the National Ploughing Association (NPA), Aidan Murphy, says that the ploughing is not in competition with the Spring Show at the RDS in Dublin. He describes the Spring Show as a static show which attracts a wide range of people, while the ploughing appeals mainly to people from rural Ireland.
