Kilkenny Arts Week starts with a bang and a performance of Tchaikovsky's '1812 Overture'.

President Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh accompanied by his wife Máirín, opens the second Kilkenny Arts Week in the grounds of Kilkenny Castle. Present at the launch are Mayor of Kilkenny John J Holohan, officials of the corporation, and members of the public.

Kilkenny Arts Week opening event is a performance of Tchaikovsky's '1812 Overture' given by a band of the Military Training Camp. The Russian composer's musical score includes dramatic cannon shots. The Kilkenny performance utilises 25-pounders from the 6th Field Artillery Regiment, Kildare. At the appropriate times, the field guns are fired, ensuring Kilkenny Arts Week opens with a bang.
