A special RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta broadcast from Galway honours Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh.

The lifetime of work Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh was celebrated by RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta in a special programme. 'Mícheál – Tráchaire ár Linne' was broadcast live from the Galway Bay Hotel and presented by Seán Bán Breathnach.

For many, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh was the public voice of the GAA with his uniquely entertaining and bilingual commentaries. The ever modest commentator says that the magic of football and hurling was to do with the games themselves and the players.

Former Kerry football captain Dara Ó Cinnéide paid tribute to Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh and how he always made the players feel at ease. Former Galway hurling captain Joe Connolly described the esteem in which Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh is held.

I think he's just an amazing institution and an amazing man.

Family, friends, colleagues, GAA players, those involved with Special Olympics, greyhound racing, the Gaelscoileanna movement, and RTÉ shared their thoughts and memories of the gifted commentator.

An RTÉ News report broadcast on 10 September 2010. The reporter is Justin Treacy.
